What are essential oils

1What is an essential oil?
An essential oil is a natural concentrate derived from a plant. It is obtained by careful extraction, most of the time through distillation. Different parts of the plant can be used: leaves, flowers, bark. Sometimes, two parts of the same plant produce two different essential oils.
2What is a "chemotyped" essential oil?
A natural essential oil can include hundreds of different compounds. A chemotyped essential oil is an essential oil whose biochemical structure (the chemotype) is known. It means that the oil producer knows exactly what active molecules the oil has and at what concentrations. A chemotyped oil guarantees its effectiveness and safety. They are usually described with their Latin name. It is the best way to avoid adulterated oils (an expensive oil mixed with a cheap one from the same family) that are usually sold as if they were genuine oils.
3What is a base / vehicular / transporter oil?
A base oil (or also called vehicular or transporter) is an oil extracted from a plant. It is very similar to oils used for cooking, such as olive oil. And in fact you could use cooking oil to dilute your essential oil. However, the base oils come from plants with beneficial properties for your skin and your body, and have a rather neutral aroma. Moreover, they are usually extracted with much more care than cooking oils, in particular without heating the product. These benefits make them more suitable for use in aromatherapy.
4How can I use an essential oil?
There are several different methods: You can dilute some drops in an essential oil. You will thus obtain an oil for massages. It is recommended especially to treat conditions on the skin (acne, eczema, dermatitis, rosacea) or health problems that cause local pain (arthritis, gout). It also serves to make massages after training, in athletes and dancers. You can put a few drops of essential oil in a bowl with hot water to breathe the steam. It is the best solution to treat problems related to the respiratory tract (cold, flu, etc.) You can use a diffuser in the room where you live or work. This device will slowly diffuse the oil in the room. It is a super-SAFE method, particularly good for sick children who can benefit from oil during sleep. It is particularly good for preventing crises in asthmatic people. you can add some drops in your bathroom. It is very useful to treat sleep problems, stress or anxiety.
5Can you ingest essential oils?
Some websites recommend adding essential oils to food or water before eating or drinking. We do not recommend it, because essential oils are very concentrated and can be dangerous if they are swallowed. The recommended methods remain those mentioned above, particularly 1) massage using essential oils diluted in base oil, OR 2) inhalation (using a bowl of steam or a diffuser). You might think that diluting 2 drops of essential oil in a glass of water would reduce the risks. However, as you may already know, water and oil do not mix well. That's why it could be that a small amount of essential oil touches some internal organ of your digestive system and cause damage.
6How to use essential oils in diffuser?
It is important to vaporize the essential oils in cold since the heat modifies the chemical formula and alters its properties. It is preferable then diffusion by nebulization: the oils transformed into micro drops pass into the air in all their integrity, preserving their virtues. To avoid the saturation of the air in aromatic molecules, it is necessary to respect the time indicated in the device: the recommended time is 30 minutes in large rooms and 15 minutes in rooms. Always in the absence of people, especially children.
7Can I use essential oils on my skin?
It is imperative to dilute the essential oils in a vegetable oil (almond, argan, wheat germ) if they are applied to the skin. In addition, certain essential oils can irritate the skin (bergamot, lemon). A skin test is recommended in the fold of the elbow to verify the sensitivity itself. Essential oils are very active concentrates. Therefore it is important to respect the doses, even if it is a drop. In addition, beyond certain amounts there is a rest effect, so the effects are not as expected.
8Essential oils suitable for children?
Never in children younger than 3 years. In children between 3 and 12 years, you always have to divide the amounts in half. As a precaution, it is preferable to use sweet oils such as citrus fruits or diffuser synergies created especially for children. As a precaution, all essential oils are relatively discouraged, as in children under 3 years of age, in pregnant or lactating women. A competent therapist will advise you of your particular case.
